Last night, he warned friends not to go to college in the “pacific northwest” today, and went to Umpqua Community College equipped with an AR-15 assault rifle, three other guns, body armor, and enough ammunition for a prolonged gun battle, according to police sources.
The AR-15 actually isn’t an assault rifle as it is semi automatic. Also, where are you getting that is what he used? Didn’t see it anywhere.

Ah, we have a nitpicker taking umbrage with my calling the AR-15 an “assault rifle” because the civilian version is sold without selective fire capability, with the consequence that an experienced shooter can fire only 3 rounds or so per second instead of 13.3 rounds per second. However, you’re still getting shot with the same bullets, and they make just as big a hole in you, if you’re on the getting end of this weapon. My point is, this is a military weapon designed for fighting wars and assaulting enemy positions, hence the term “assault rifle,” and what difference does it make whether it fires 1 round or 3 rounds with each trigger pull? If you want to get technical about it, the military version isn’t full-auto anymore, either; it’s been modified to fire 3-round bursts, which simply reflects how soldiers actually use them in combat. In full-auto mode, you wouldn’t hit anything after the first 3 rounds anyway, because they spray all over the place due to the recoil, so nobody holds down the trigger and empties the magazine. In any case, the M-16s would likely jam if you did that. In practice, soldiers in combat squeeze off short bursts. This was true even in Vietnam, where we had the full-auto early version of this rifle. If you want to get even more technical, the major armies stopped training troops in aimed fire after World War 2, and all modern armies equipped with assault rifles rely on high fire volumes — “firepower” — instead of accuracy to hit enemy troops. So it’s intended to be a point-and-shoot, not aim-and-shoot, weapon; and when some madman sprays a school classroom with an AR-15, he’s using it the same way an infantryman would. The small difference in rate of fire is rather immaterial; it’s an “assault weapon” because it employs a high rate of fire to assault a target. You’re arguing about the difference between bang-bang-bang and rat-tat-tat. Well, that’s why we call it an “assault rifle” and not a “machinegun.”
