As Seattle goes to the polls, our mail in ballots are due by next Tuesday!
Meanwhile, something new is happening .. at least new for Seattle. One candidate, Kshama Sawant, has built her campaign in District 3 on masses of external funds. Almost 90% of her contributors .. especially the big dollar folks are from outside her district and even outside of Washington State.
The number of dollars is also beyond anyone’s imagination. An inside source told me that Sawant expects to spend … $400,000.

This is something very new for a city council DISTRICT race where one might think the money would come from folks who live here or have small businesses in the Third. Her nearest rival, Pam Banks, has negligible contributions from outside Seattle and, of course, much less money to spend.
Then too, there is Sawant’s army. Everywhere she goes, Sawant has a cheering section of red shirted, Swantistas who chant her slogans and yell her name. There is a lot of hate in the red shirts .. hate for landlords, business men, and our mayor. Sawant’s army of red shirts even shares the fascist demonization of Jews Israelis.. calling for our city council to support BDS. Still her crew are are not the gun totin Black and Brown shirts of Mussolini and Hitler. For one thing they are much less organized and never armed. Sawant’s crew does a better job of emulating Maoists by quoting the great leader and telling miraculous tales about how she is living on $40,000 a year while commuting by cab and buying a half million dollar house! Of course these red shirts are not the state sponsored red book waving crowd of Mao’s China. Rather Sawant’s army reminds me of the fashionable radicals of the Vietnam era whose protests elected Richard Nixon.
I will vote for Pam Banks.
