Sen. Lindsay Graham is upset with Donald Trump for attacking John McCain’s military service record. While other Republicans are calling for Trump to drop out of the presidential race, Graham — who’s also seeking the GOP nominating — said,
“I don’t care if he drops out. Stay in the race, just stop being a jackass. … I’m looking for him to … stop saying stuff like this. The world is falling apart. We’re becoming Greece. The Ayatollah’s on the verge of having a nuclear weapon …. You know, run for president, but don’t be the world’s biggest jackass.”
(Click here for story.) The trouble is, Graham is being a jackass himself. The world isn’t falling apart; there are no major wars at this time, there are fewer dictatorships and more democracies, and billions of people are rising from poverty into middle classes. Sure, there are challenges; when haven’t there been? There’s ISIS, and Putin’s land grabs, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to fester, Greece is still being bullied by Germany, etc. But the U.S. is not becoming Greece, and Obama (and leaders of several other countries) has just negotiated a deal that moves the Ayatollah farther away from getting a nuclear weapon. The next president will have to deal with all these things, but will step into a much better situation than our current Democratic president inherited from the last Republican president in 2009, and to misrepresent otherwise as Graham does is being a jackass.
Update: But Trump is still the bigger jackass. CNN reports he responded to Graham’s name-calling by releasing Graham’s personal cellphone number to harass him.
