2 Democratic Senators propose mandatory reporting of police shootings

11937409-standardIncredibly, the United States has no centralized reporting of fatal use of police force, and nobody knows how many citizens are killed by police in this country every year. Incomplete statistics kept by the FBI from voluntary reporting by some of the nation’s 18,000 police agencies suggest more than 1,000 Americans are killed by cops annually. Police deaths are about 1/10th that number.

Now, two Democratic senators — Barbara Boxer of California and Corey Booker of New Jersey — have proposed legislation that would require mandatory reporting by states of all deaths and injuries resulting from law enforcement actions.
