A couple of days ago, THE-Ave wrote about how the University of Alabama has decided to balance its effort at recruiting top student athletes by showing it can recruiting top students!

Now Ronald Nelson, a Black student from Tennessee,   turned down every Ivy League school for University of Alabama    Ronald Nelson rejected offers from Stanford, Johns Hopkins, New York University, Vanderbilt, and Washington University in St. Louis.  Nelson chose  Alabama University to avoid graduating with student debt .

Mr. Nelson has a  GPA of 4.58, a 2260 out of 2400 on his SATS, a 34 out of 36 on his ACT, and 15 completed AP courses.  His family, however, is well enough off that scholarship support at the  Ivy League schools was limited because Mr. Nelson’s family income is too high and these schools  base aid on  family income, assets and size.  Ronald Sr. works as an engineer at the Federal Aviation Society. His mother Sandra works in Management at FedEx headquarters.

The Red Tide attracted the student by aggressive recruiting, including a generous scholarship.  admittance into their selective honors program, and offering him opportunities to work with programs at UA that fit Mr. Nelson’s interests.
