Memories Pizza of Walkerton, Indiana, announced today they will serve gay customers but will not cater gay weddings, thereby earning the dubious distinction of becoming the first Indiana business to exploit that state’s new “religious freedom” law to openly discriminate against gay people.
“The O’Connor family, who owns Memories Pizza, says they have a right to believe in their religion and protect those ideals,” ABC News reported. “‘If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no,’ says Crystal O’Connor of Memories Pizza.”
Ms. O’Connor is confused. Denying service to someone because of who they are isn’t an “ideal.” It’s antisocial behavior. Catering those customers’ special events, as she routinely does for other customers, doesn’t infringe on her religious freedom or beliefs — unless she wishes to argue that her religion requires her to be a practicing bigot. I assume she’s not a Christian, because Jesus didn’t discriminate against gays or anyone else. He welcomed everyone.
