Festival de la Ballena Jorobada

Today is El Festival de la Ballena Jorobada.  The festival is held at a lighthouse in Rincón, Puerto Rico, where the humpback whales can be seen in the ocean during their breeding season.   The whales prefer the warm and calm waters off the coast of Rincón to give birth to their offspring, and because of this, the town has been called the cradle of the humpback whale [Cuna de las Ballenas Jorobadas].

Like some of the tourists who also come to this island, the humpbacks normally live in the chill climates of  Ireland, Greenland and Canada. But 80 percent migrate between November and April to the warm waters of the Caribbean to mate and give birth to their young.
