If You Moaned, You Weren’t Raped

Summary: If you’re seduced by a Heisman-winning FSU quarterback, moaning during the encounter transforms it from rape to consensual sex. At least, that’s what star player Jameis Winston’s lawyer argued at FSU’s hearing on whether Winston violated the school’s code of conduct, a hearing the victim’s lawyer is calling “fixed” and a sham. Predictably, the hearing determined the evidence was “insufficient to satisfy the burden of proof.”

“I don’t want to impugn the proceeding as corrupt” — no, of course not, it was presided over by a former state supreme court justice — “but I think it was biased and the fix was in,” the woman’s lawyer told the Associated Press. (Actually, that sounds a whole lot like “corrupt” to me, but whatever.)

“It’s all about a football game 10 days from today. It turned out to be just a predetermined whitewash to keep a guy playing football. The proper forum to getting to the truth is going to be the court of law, not, essentially, a sham court like this one turned out to be,” he said.

Really? Does he really believe that in Florida, a state that twice has elected a Medicare embezzler as its governor, there’s a judge or prosecutor or juror with enough guts to return a finding that FSU’s quarterback raped someone? Hey, I’m not saying he’s guilty of anything more than possessing normal hormones for his age and gender; I’m merely asking whether that woman can get a fair trial in Florida. Personally, I think she’d better find another state to live in, and fast, while she still can. Before FSU football fans find out who she is and where she lives.

P.S.: I considered using this article as a vehicle to discuss the topic of campus sexual harassment (or, for that matter, sexual harassment in the military, in workplaces, and just about everywhere else in our egalitarian society), but why bother, when it’s obvious the system (especially the legal system) wants women to put their burkhas back on, shut up, do as they’re told, and cook for the men (and eat last) as in Roger-Rabbit-icon1 other enlightened societies (e.g., Afghanistan’s)?
