Sawantism

Mike James I don’t know if Socialist Kshama Sawant will be re-elected next year, or which of the 7 new city council districts she may or may not represent, but I’d guess an important question in that campaign would be “what is the work/what are the expectations of a council member” – to lead demonstrations, to stand in the middle of a street, to get themselves arrested in a public protest? Or rather, in collaboration with colleagues, tend to the nagging and likely more mundane business of a city government – roads, public safety, social justice, education, etc.?
Sawant provides her own answer here, saying of her protest for a higher wage, of her arrest, “This is how you show political leadership.”
Whether it is, or not, will surely be a question for voters in 2015.

Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant was one of four people arrested Wednesday evening for failing to disperse during a protest outside Alaska Airlines headquarters calling for a $15 minimum wage for airport workers.
