Buchenwald 59

I note in today’s (11/11/14)  New York Times a story about the mementos of a Shoah survivor.  Mary Berg’s mother was an American, which is why she survived.  She was in the Warsaw Ghetto and kept a diary which was published in the US in the forties.  She campaigned on behalf of the victims of the Shoah, but then refused to talk about her experiences  and slipped into anonymity.  She died last year and her photo albums and scrapbooks were sold at an estate sale to an antiques dealer for $10.  They were to be sold at auction this month.  When her relatives, who had been unaware of the sale or the auction learned about it, they made contact with the USHMM, asking that it acquire the materials, and with the auction house.  The auction has now been canceled.
