Temporary fix from reality

Last week after the Seattle Seahawks Monday Night Football victory the city of Seattle was happy and full of energy.

While on the bus last week a few days before the Dallas Cowboy game,  I  overheard two women talking about the fact that the Seahawks have brought the city together.  To a degree the women are correct,  It is crazy,  people of all ethnicities talking to each other, excited about our football team.  I’m sure that the local economy has benefited from the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl last year.  People that normally do not talk to me, were initiating conversations with me about football.  I wish that our city was like this all the time.  I wish that it didnt take a football team winning to create a sense of togetherness.

Seahawk fans after wins

Going into this past Sunday everyone was excited.  I enjoyed reading Hawks fans on my Facebook news feed diss the Dallas Cowboys and their fans.  It was funny, and it is really cool to see people show solidarity.

After the Hawks lost, I felt like the majority of people in Seattle lost all reason to live.  So far this week it is quiet, old white women go back to being scared of me.  Its brought me to the conclusion that sports only provide a temporary fix from reality.

Seahawks fans after we lose.

Seahawks fans after we lose.

We can not rely on sports to promote diversity, or awareness for community for the simple fact that it only works when the team wins.

Not to mention the fact that the NFL is a racist, misogynistic organization that exploits its employees and should not be used nor considered as a device for social change until it deals with its own internal issues.
