This will not end well. The regime will send in tanks, crush the protests, and arrest dissidents and ship them off to concentration camps. Just as they did at Tiananmen Square. Don’t forget, China is a communist dictatorship run by guys who don’t believe in democracy and will cling to power at any cost. Having repossessed Hong Kong from the British, they won’t make an exception for Hong Kong. They’ll make an example of it. But having said this, I think the brave people of Hong Kong should continue their protests anyway. Humanity should stand up to tyranny everywhere it exists. That’s the only chance there is of bringing dictators down.

I think you misunderstand China. It is not a Communist state (whatever that might be. China is a Corporate State … the sort of state Mussolini talked abut and might have achieved if he has kept his ego in check and had not been driven to racism by his alliance with Hitler.

Think of China s Google or the old GM. The Xi government will try to settle the HK issue in a way that is best for the corporation’s business. Sending in the Army would hurt China’s banking industry (centered di8n HK)and its effort to extend the imperial sway over neighbors like Japan, Korea, and the South China Sea.

I suspect they will be patient, allowing the occupants (cute name for the crowd?) to tire. One Xi really needs is to take a Koch brother’s approach .. use Beijing’s monstrous financial and media resources to assure that the election in HK goes their way.

The near term trick then is not lose face. I hope and believe the occupants understand this and will respond to some sort of deal that seems to say the Beijing will n to censor the list of candidates.
