I think Israel’s plan is now clear. The near term end game is for Hamas to be made irrelevant, for the PLO (or perhaps Egypt) to provide governance in Gaza and to push the Palestinians there to the same side of peace that is already available for Arabs living in the West Bank … jobs and schools. Today Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Hamas to accept the Egyptian ceasefire initiative, and said the path to restoration of calm in Gaza is an “intertwined” system of demilitarization of Gaza and “social and economic relief” for the Palestinian people there.
