BREAKING NEWS: Israel selects radical supporter of greater Israel as President

Israel’s parliament has elected Reuven Rivlin,  to replace Shimon Peres, a Nobel Laureate devoted to peace.  M.r Rivlin unabashedly opposes it.

Rivlin is a firm backer of the illegal Israeli settlement drive on the West Bank, and has argued that Israel should grant citizenship to the Palestinians of the West Bank rather than keep them under the current combination of Palestinian self-rule and Israeli military rule.

On the good side, Mr. Rivlin is known as a firm supporter of democracy, unlike some others in his Likud party.  He opposed a Likud bill aimed at members of Israel’s Arab minority to make citizenship and voting dependent on declaring loyalty to Israel as a Jewish state. He also opposed a bill aiming to muffle criticism of government and army policies in the West Bank by setting a high tax rate on foreign government donations to Israeli non-governmental organisations..
