Responding to an email complaint

SMS thumb CezanneA relative who lives in South Carolina has complained that  posts here about that state are unfair

My reply:
As for posts about SC, they really are nothing new.  Like many here in Seattle I have been angry that Boeing moved its assembly plant to avoid paying skilled workers a fair wage and because South Carolina gave them a tax break.  Of course Boeing paid for all that with the lousy assembly record of the 787.
So TA has been writing about South Carolina for some time.  Beyond that I really do dislike the place.  It is very pretty, but the history of racism there is worse than anything in Germany both because it went on for a longer time and because  today’s South Carolina shows little evidence of repentance.  As a Jew I am a lot more comfortable in Berlin than in Charleston!
That said, we all need to decide how to deal with the good and the bad about wherever we live. If you seriously want to look on TA you will find a lot about my own state that is negative. Did you know, for example, that my state hosts(or has until recently)had  the Jefferson Davis Highway?
FWIW, there will be a comment on the JD highway next 4 July on TA!
Did you know that WA state is also  the long term home of the Birch Society and that the Aryan Nation has its filthy roots not far from here?  On the other hand we are proud to have given birth to the Wobblies and Jimi Hendrix. I also think our two Senators offer a lot more to be proud of than Jim DeMint or the oreo Tim Scott, official portrait, 113th Congress.jpg  SC Senator Tim Scott.  As for Lindsey Graham, I used to respect the man but his acquiescence to the Reprican cause .. The lack of respect he has shown for the patriots who died in  Benghazi is disgusting.
As for Jews having lived in SC a long time., that is a sad fact of the anti-Semitism of America’s Northern puritan fathers.  Our record as a people in  SC, however,  is pretty bad,  South Carolina’s Jews should share the shame of slavery and  and Jim Crow.  From what I have read, unlike the Jews of South Africa, the Jews of SC were pro slavery and contnied to be  pro segregation.  I do not believe that the Charleston Jewish community gave rise to a Nadine Gordimer or that it has today done anything to express its remorse for Jim Crow. I do know that the synagogue you mentioned in Charleston had a majority of the founding members of the Scottish Rite of Masonry, believed by some to have then been a racist organization associated with the KKK.
All that said, I would be very interested in offering you a chance to write about your experiences as Jews living in SC.  How does the community deal with the huge Tea Party presence?  Are members of your congregation members of the TP or do they work for progressive candidates?   Does the Temple speak out on issues like voters rights? What about intermarriage?  Are there gay couples in your shul or Temple? How does a reform shul in a place like SC deal with the changing demographics?  Do you welcome African/American members?  Do you work with the African American Baptists on joint commitments to the heritage we share at Pesach?  Do Jews in your shul identify with the Mississippi three?
You are welcome to reply here.

Oreo? Not a very nice way to describe a distinguished public servant.
