Commentary by SMS: The Unions … why they fail

Hyatt settles with workers it fired when they tried to unionize

I am less disturbed by this sort of effort to disenfranchise low end workers than I am by the failure of the unions to organize the middle class.  I think the modern union has lost its way … its original focus on the most oppressed has, at least in the US, been resolved by social programs like the minimum wage and, now by Obamacare.

The focus in government workers has also misled the movement because the ultimate authority nof the ballot box overrides union rights. look at the teacher unions .. their efforts have driven a prestigious profession, the public school teacher,  down to a lowest common denominator that even liberals, e.f. Secretary Duncan, sees as needing reform.

What is missing is a focus in middle class jobs.  The worker at Amazon or Costco, has a lot more clout in our society than the grape pickers or cola miners.  Why do we NEBVER see an effort to organize teachers in private schools?
