Republicans are not the only folks who can not accept science.
Liberals are obsessed with he ides that uranium is a bad word. Uranium is a natural part of our environments … as are many other metals, including lead. In the case of uranium, a small part of uranium includes unstable isotopes that can be purified to make atomic bombs. After the isotopes are removed, the remaining metal is very heavy .. a good material for making bullets and shells that can penetrate armor. That metal is called “depleted uranium” and it is nto radioactive .. just lethal if it hits you.
An article in today’s Huff Post reports that
Ten years after the start of the U.S. invasion in Iraq, doctors in some of the Middle Eastern nation’s cities are witnessing an abnormally high number of cases of cancer and birth defects. Scientists suspect the rise is tied to the use of depleted uranium and white phosphorus in military assaults.
So I went to the article they cite. The truth is horrid, birth defects in Iraq are at a very high rate .. probably due to the resilts of war, possibly to heavy metals like lead but also to deficiencies ion folic acid, a vitamin.
As for depleted uranium, it is not even mentioned in the article. In fact their data show no evidence that uranium itself is elevated in these children:. Apparently children in neighboring Iran also have higher levels than Italians. The silly part of me wants to suggest that the uranium comes from the Shiites ritual of self flagellation.
Does the left wants to support real science, stem cells, global warming, evolution …… ?
