Al Shabaab: Kenya asks UN to probe Eritrea

Diplomatic relations between Kenya and Eritrea have worsened after Kenya formally filed a case with the United Nations Security Council asking it to investigate Eritrea for supporting Al Shabaab. If the UN takes up Kenya’s case and finds evidence against Eritrea, the country could face severe sanctions. Nairobi’s action came just days after Asmara asked the UN to reprimand Kenya for associating her with the Somalia-based terrorist group.

Kenya’s UN Permanent Representative Macharia Kamau filed the case days after the Eritrean foreign minister Osman Saleh wrote to the Council, calling for independent investigations into Kenya’s accusations that it was arming the Al Shabaab in Somalia. Eritrea is seeking to have Kenya publicly reprimanded for “serious and harmful accusations,” including claims that Asmara has recently supplied planeloads of arms to the Al Shabaab militants inside Somalia.
