Female General Commands US Forces in Libya

Major General Margaret H. Woodward, 51, has been the Commander of the 17th Air Force and US Air Forces Africa at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany since June 2010. The command serves as the air component for US Africa Command, and led the military operation against Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Woodward coordinated the American air campaign from March 19 to April 4, after which NATO took over. Woodward entered the Air Force in 1982, studied at the National War College, and later trained fighter pilots. She flew tanker aircraft during the 1989 US invasion of Panama and in the Balkans, and commanded units of tanker aircraft in Iraq and Afghanistan.
