THE Ave is “off campus” .. This is One Reason Why:

Yesterday I heard a very strong rumor about a scandal that may break soon on the Seattle media.  The rumor is that one or more Seattle media (not TA!) has been using the freedom on information act to mine for abuses in the use of UW email.  The seed for this search was the email of a high level UW faculty member who had already pleaded guilty on other charges.  Since these charges did involve use of

@uw.edu

, the investigators followed links, got more FOI emails and a hunt has begun.

This brings me to a suggestion. I honestly do not know why any of us still use the UW email system other than for mail that requires complying with UW regulations. As an address @uw.edu has some value, but the UW email client (PINE) long ago outlived its usefulness. Outlook (if hosted off campus), Gmail, Hotmail, Comcast, Go Daddy , .. all these offer you some privacy. Even to read your @uw.edu mail, any of thes eis a much better client than the ones that UW has traditionally offered. You can easily forward your @uw.edu mail to any other iSP. This at least would give you osme semblance of privacy.

That is why I urge contributors and editors at TA to NOT use @uw.edu as an address or UW IT as their primary email server.
