Huge New Whale at Children’s, Work of Marvin Oliver

Marvin Oliver has a new show at Stonington Gallery. Marvin is  one the UW’s world class artists and a leader in the tradition of Northwest Coastal Art originating in the Washington State’s Lopez Island under Bill Holm, now UW Professor Emeritus, and Mungo Martin, perhaps the greatest of all Coastal Artists and an heir to Kwakiutl traditions threatened with extinction by Christian missionaries in Canada.  Marvin is Curator of Contemporary Native American Art at the Burke Museum.

This whale is from a 1 million dollar installation funded by Melinda Gates at Children’s Hospital! The work is in Marvin’s traditional style, a representational style that builds on traditional designs of his own Quinalt heritage and fits perfectly into the theme of NW waters used throughout the new childcare facility named for Mrs. Gates. The whale, while traditional, is also transitional because it is in glass. The light thrown through this model of the whale st Stonington  is more exciting than the whale itself and portends new fun now as Marvin has begun to bring this tradition into an entirely new forms using blown glass.  Awesome.
